Style Nazis

Actual real Nazis. Not just people I disagree with. Ones with swastika armbands and NSDAP membership cards.

Because in the countries occupied by the Nazis, they really did start interfering with style names. They weren't happy with German-derived names being used for Dutch beer. In particular, Dortmunder.

XVII. USE OF THE NAME "DORTMUNDER".
Mr Stikker says that the Ausfuhrgemeinschaft requires the Phoenix brewery to stop using the name "Dortmunder". The Phoenix brewery has asked the C.B.K. to take up this matter with the Ausfuhrgemeinschaft.

The C.B.K. has, however, advised the Phoenix to send to the Ausfuhrgemeinschaft a copy of the judgment concerning the procedure, which was won in 1928 on this matter. The C.B.K. thought it desirable not to come to the fore in this matter at this time.

The board agrees with this state of affairs.
Minutes of the management of the CBK on 10th December 1940, held at the Amsterdam City Archives, document number 31121-1, pages 287-288.

Basically, the CBK (the Dutch brewers' organisation) wanted to keep its head down. Probably not a bad idea given the nutcases they had to deal with.

Intermediate beer was something between Lagerbier and heavy beer strength. At this point, 8.8º to 9.1º Plato.

XXIII. DISPENSATION CONCERNING THE CASE DORTUUNDER,
Mr. Ivens says that four breweries have applied for the above-mentioned dispensation for beer in the intermediate category. In view of the possibility of action against German beer names, it is desirable to reserve the name Dortmunder for beer of a higher quality.

Mr. Smits van Waesberghe sees the merits of this, but nevertheless points to the commercial objections that arise from this for the breweries concerned.

After some discussion, the board decides that the dispensation for the name Dortmunder for intermediate beer will only be granted to those breweries that until now regularly sold such beer under that name, which dispensation will expire on July 1, 1941.
Minutes of the management of the CBK on 21st January 1941, held at the Amsterdamse Stadsarchief, document number 31121-1, page 271.

OK to call your beer Dortmunder, then, but only for a few more months. That's very generous of the occupiers.

In Belgium, it went even further, banning even more style names.

"Mr Stikker says that it has recently been forbidden in Belgium to give a Belgian beer names that indicate a foreign origin, such as "Pilsen", "Baviere", "Munich", "Dortmund"."
Minutes of the management of the CBK on 14th November 1940, held at the Amsterdamse Stadsarchief, document number 31121-1, page 297.

Didn't they have more important things to worry about than beer names? Like that war they were busy losing.

Escorted off the premises

For the first time in my life I was escorted off the premises.

We were in this really nice beer garden in a park a bit west of the city centre. I was taking lots of photos because it was so nice. Then someone behind one of the food counters started shouting at me "Loeschen, loeschen" OK, I thought, he wants me to erase the photo of him. So I did. Then he told me to erase all my photos of the beer garden I erased a couple and went back and sat down.

Then the boss came and told me I had to show him all the photos I'd taken and erase them, even the ones that were just of my beer. He threatened to call the police if I didn't. Even the one of the entrance, taken from the street. He claimed that it was all private property and I couldn't take any photos. He followed me out onto the street shouting insults at me.

Un-fucking-believable. It's like the Vondel park, with a beer garden just in one corner. It's the most unpleasant experience I've ever had in a pub. And the only time I've ever been thrown out.

I've taken photos in thousands of pubs. I've never had that reaction before. So aggressive and threatening. He said it was Hausbruch and I was breaking the law - is that true? What a total twat. I had been going to give the place a really good write up.

The joke is that I'd taken loads of video that he didn't notice.

Afterwards we went to the LoewenbraeuKeller and I asked the waiter if I was allowed to take photos. He looked at me like I was an idiot for asking: "Selbstverstaendlich" he said.

This is the place:

Tell me if you can see anywhere it says where you aren't allowed to take photos.

It really spoiled what had been a great experience.

Following guidelines

On reflection, and after a couple of beers, I realised this post was a pile of crap. Repetitive, unimaginative and an insult to everyone's intelligence, including mine.

Instead, I'm giving you a sneak preview of our next film. The first title was "They flew to Bruges". But that was too derivative. It's now called "Vive la résistance". Lexie made a sten gun yesterday. We're just about ready to go. All we need is a script.

Usually Lexie does the writing. It's my turn now. I didn't realise how hard it was. This is what I've got so far:

Vive la Resistance!

The Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame etc with French accordion music in the background.
The caption "France 1940"

Hitler screams and waves his arms around then the Panzers roll forward to the sound of Blitzkrieg Bop

Scene 1

A small group of men huddle around a table, drinking wine.

Barclay Perkins, British secret agent, is speaking in a coarse whisper.

. . . . .

I suppose I need the odd bit of dialogue. That's just a detail. I've got an impressive-sounding name for the hero. What more do I need? Barclay Perkins is surely enough.

You will soon be banned from beer advocate, good day to you sir.

I confess, I've cried quite a bit since I read that. I'm going to be banned from BeerAdvocate. I cried so much, my St. Bernardus Abt turned into St. Bernardus Pater.

What am I going to do? When I want to be entertained by discussions such as

Will the next "great American beer" be an ale?
Biere de Champagne Worth the Price?
Question about firkin vs cask
Coming up on review #400: any suggestions?
What Beer & Music have you been frequenting of late?
Thoughts/opinions on Double White Ales?
Finally got my beer porn ready!!!
Pregaming? anyone do it?
What's your favorite Pumpkin Ale?
Do lagers have an inherent skunk?
"Imperial Pale Ale" as a style?

My life won't be worth living. Please, plead with them not to ban me. I really can't be responsible for my actions if I get banned. It could be really bad. I may even start watching Hollyoaks. You wouldn't want that, would you?

Who will be the first to buy Lexie vodka?

This post is pretty self-explanatory. Who will be the first to buy Lexie vodka?

I assume you haven't noticed the donation button I've added. Top left of this page. You have seen it? Then there's just one thing I have to say to you. Tight bastard.

A sad, young boy asks for money to buy vodka. And what do you say to him? "Bugger off, hippy!"

Every day he looks. "Has anyone bought me a vodka today, dad?" "No, Lexie. My readers must be Nazis."

You aren't really a Nazi, are you? Would you deprive a 9-year-old child of vodka? Would you? Would you? Really? Then maybe you are a Nazi, after all.
