Kent Beers in 1902

Doing one of my random searches of the British Newspaper Archive a fascinating page of adverts.

It's from a local paper and features advertisements from three breweries from the immediate vicinity. What fascinates me are the similarities and differences between the three brewery's ranges.

The only beer common to all three is my old favourite, AK. Tomson & Wotton even brewed two AKs, presumably at different strengths because the prices are different. Slightly weird to see an AK described as East India Pale Ale. Light Bitter, which how the other two breweries describe it, is more usual.

Shepherd Neame and Tomson & Wotton also both have a beer called KK as their strongest Pale Ale. While Rigden's is called XXK. Though that is another way of writing KK. The london breweries originally called their Stock Ales XXK, XXXK and XXXK, before switching over to KK, KKK and KKKK. At 60s, Shep's KK was a very expensive beer. That's about the same as you'd pay for a barrel of Bass Pale Ale, a beer that commanded a high price.

I'm sure Tomson & Wotton brewed a Mild, even though it isn't mentioned in their advert. Odd that the other two breweries both call theirs Mild Beer rather than the more standard Mild Ale. Note that both only have a single beer described as Mild.

I was surprised to see that the two Faversham breweries produced both Table Ale and Table Beer. Table anything was pretty rare in England by this point. It had long been dropped by the big London brewers. The examples here must have been pretty low gravity as they're under 30s per barrel. At that price, they's have to be under 1040º.

Porter was already starting to die out in the provinces by this time. Though it seems to have clung on longer in the Southeast, possibly because of the proximity to London. Porter remained popular in the capital longer than elsewhere.

There's only one Strong Ale, Rigden's XXX. Which I'm guessing is a Stock Ale rather than a Stock Pale Ale.

Bottled beers in the 1860's

Hello. It's me again, with yet more stuff about bottled beer. Not quite sure how we've ended up in bottled beer week. Well, bottled beer fortnight, more like. You'd best just pray I don't dig out my copy of "Bottling of British Beers". I'd be busy for a month or two. Though that has just inspired me to do a quick search in the Journal of the Institute of Brewing. Make that six months.

As you can see, I've lumped the beers into styles in a fairly haphazard way. It's not very consistent, as I've given Scotch Ales their own category and listed the Burton Ales as Strong Ales.

The trends in bottled beer are clear in this set. Lots of Pale Ales/IPA, Stout and Strong Ales. Just a few Table Ales, Porters and Mild Ales. Also clear is how the list is dominated by a few large breweries: Bass, Allsopp and Guinness. Bass and Allsopp seem to have had the bottled IPA market pretty much sewn up between them. Guinness likewise with the bottled Stout market, though Barclay Perkins was still hanging in there.

Talking of Barclay Perkins, I have details of their beers that appear in the table. It's a bit complicated for two reasons. First, I don't have details from the exact year, 1867, but a decade earlier, 1856. Second, there are no beers called Double Stout and Extra Stout in the brewing records. The brewhouse names for their Porters and Stouts were:

Barclay Perkins Porter/Stout in 1856
beer description OG
TT Running Porter 1060
EI East India Porter 1061
Hhd Keeping Porter 1060
FSt Family Stout 1061
BSt Brown Stout 1092
IBSt Imperial Stout 1107
Source:
Barclay Perkins brewing record held at the London Metropolitan Archives, document number ACC/2305/1/542.

It looks like the Double Stout was BSt and the London Stout was FSt. I only have details of TT from the late 1860's, when it had a gravity of around 1055. Assuming a similar fall (about 8%) in the OG, that would leave BSt at 1084 and FSt at 1056.

It's interesting to see that the Burton brewers were still very much in the strong Burton Ale business, despite the enormous fame of the Pale Ales of Bass and Allsopp. In fact, they were even in the Mild Ale business still - all the Mild Ales in the table (the unknown one excepted) are from Burton.

Hang on, I've some idea of the Bass gravities of this period, too. A little bit later, but still pretty close:

Bass OG's in the 1870's
Beer OG
India Pale Ale 1060
No. 1 Burton Ale 1110
No. 2 Burton Ale 1090
No. 3a Ale (Old Ale) 1085

No. 4 Burton Ale 1070
No. 5 Burton Ale 1065
No. 6 Burton Ale 1060
No. 2 (P2) Imperial Stout 1095
No. 3 (P3) Extra Stout 1075
No. 4 (P4) Double Stout 1070
No. 5 (P5) Stout 1065
Source:
Bass price list

My guess would be that the XX Mild Ale is No. 6 Burton Ale. The Pale Ale is pretty obvious. Based on the price, the Bass Burton Ale from 1861 looks like No. 3 Burton Ale. Allsopps "Burton Ale (Extra Strong, No. 1)" presumably was a similar strength to Bass No. 1

And finally we get to Cooper. The term usually meant a mixture of Porter and Stout. I suspect by this time, when referring to a bottled beer, it was often straight Porter. Though in this case that can't be true as it's more expensive than the cheapest Stout, No. 3 Stout. At the price it was being sold at, No. 3 Stout looks like it was of Porter-strength. Why did the name Porter so fall out of favour as a bottled beer? It's an odd one, that.

Surprisingly, Table Ale was still kicking around. It gradually faded away in the second half of the 19th century, its place being taken by another type of low-gravity beer: Light Dinner Ale. A style which eventually dropped the Dinner and became plain old Light Ale. One of the styles most threatened with extinction

I think you can guess what will be coming next - the 1870's.

Aitchison beers 1843 - 1859

Advertisements can tell you a lot. That's why I actively search them out. Not with too much success when it comes to Scottish breweries. Except in the case of Aitchison, where I found a nice set of ads from the middle of the 19th century.

Irritatingly, many of the adverts don't specify the bottle size. That's why I've put "quart?" in the table. My guess would be that they are reputed quarts. A reputed quart is two thirds of an Imperial quart, or 757.7 ml. The ones marked "pint" and "quart" look like Imperial measures. At least when I compare the price of the same beer on draught.

So they're a bit easier to see at a glance, I've put them into a table. There are five main types of beer on offer: Table Ale, Edinburgh Ale, Strong Ale, Draught Ale and Mild Ale. But on closer observation it becomes clear that the same beers are being described by different names.

Let's start with everyone's favourite nowadays, India Pale Ale. Though it isn't always called that in the adverts. It also appears as India Ale, Pale India Beer, Pale Export India Beer and Pale India Ale. Couldn't they make their mind up what to call it? It's a great demonstration of just how inconsistent British breweries were in their naming conventions.

Interesting that Aitchison were already brewing IPA in 1840. That's pretty early. But we've already learned that Scottish brewers were quick to jump on the Pale Ale train. Though Aitchison's prices were lower than those of Allsopp. In 1845 a dozen quarts of Allsopp's IPA cost 4s 6d. I guess the big Burton brewers could get away with charging more.

Handy that the 1840 advert has a description of Aitchison's IPA: "Highly hopped and attenuated India Ale." Just for the last few brainwashed style nazis out there who still believe that Scottish beer only ever had a few hops waved at it. The description pretty much sums up the characteristics of early IPA: heavily hopped and highly attenuated.

Next we come to Table Ale. Slightly odd choice of name there. Usually it was called Table Beer, especially if it was heavily hopped, as was often the case. Being low gravity it often needed a good dose of hops to stop it spoiling too quickly. We know this one was heavily hopped because the advert says so "highly Hopped, an excellent Stomachic". The price is surprisingly high: the same as the India Ale.

The Scots seem to have had a name for Table Beer. It's not a type of beer that you would normally expect to get shipped very far. Yet Scottish breweries were selling it as far away as London.

Now Edinburgh Ale. Or perhaps I should just say Ale, because the names Edinburgh, Scotch and Mild Ale seem to be used interchangeably. With some additionally being called Strong Ale. Then there's Pale Edinburgh Ale as well. My guess is that these would have been Shilling Ales within the brewery. Or Guinea Ales. You can see that in 1845 advert that guinea designations are used for what were described as Mild Ales.

Scottish Ales, even the very strong ones, were usually sold young. Which made them technically Mild Ales. Though as you can see, often the terms Edinburgh Ale or Scotch Ale were preferred. Confusing, isn't it? It's taken me years to get my head around it.

Now I just happen to have details of William Younger's beers from 1847. Assuming that Aitchison's would have been roughly similar, we can get some idea of their strength. Five guineas is 105/-, seven guineas 147/-. Younger's 100/- had an OG of 1090º and their 140/- an OG of 1112º. So pretty damn strong.

I assume Draught Ale is another beer of this type. But it's impossible to be sure. The naming is just too vague.

So we can see the main products of Aitchison: IPA and strong Mild Ales. Very typically Scottish.
