I wonder if the James Watt of Greenock was run by the son of the inventor, himself a tinkerer: http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/James_Watt_%28Junior%29

Faither is from Greenock so these things matter to we few.

Seems to be. Great grannie was barred from the James Watt tavern between the wars. It was next door to the family tenement at 2 MacKenzie Street.

Great to see - there are so many!
I would love to see a similar list from different times to compare it to.
i.e. the consolidation of breweries and their ownership throughout the next 2 Centuries

Hugh Baird of Glasgow was the forerunner of the modern-day firm of maltsters, I believe. James Haig in Alston St was underneath where Central Station now stands.
