What are beer houses?

A short video about the forgotten other type of pub: the beer house. Pubs which were only allowed to sell beer.

In the post prohibition, US, the term beer joint was apparently pretty common. This was in areas where hard alcohol was still legally prohibited and beer was probably of the watery 3.2% variety. I heard stories of my grandma going down the street to the local beer joint to pull my alcoholic step granddad out before he drink up the paycheck.

It's interesting to me that the temperance activists focused on shutting down beer houses when they were obviously less able to get people drunk than places that sold both beer and spirits.

And probably even less so when alcohol levels of beer kept dropping in the 1900s in the ways you've documented. I guess you'd say the temperance movement wasn't all that rational.
