Legacy

The last photo I took of Martyn Cornell, my wonderful friend. Santiago, Chile, April 2025.
Martyn Cornell's extremely sad death earlier this year got me thinking about legacy. And unpublished work.

Luckily, Martyn had completed what I'm sure he considered the pinnacle of his work: Porter. Tragic, though, that he never saw its release. It would have been an even greater tragedy, had he been struck down before finishing.

What did Martyn leave unfinished? I can't believe that he wasn't working on another book. (He asked me about self-publishing because he was so pissed off with how long it took to get a book published.)

Not to go all fanboy, but (meaning I am doing) how much material is there that hasn't been published? Including stuff chopped from Porter. I'd buy a book with that in. Niche, made possible by self-publishing.

A compilation of his, often very long, always hugely informative, blogposts would make a great book. And preserve them in print. As Zythophile is no longer there. Fuck. This material really needs to be saved.

Maybe I should get in touch with his brother.

It may be that the account could be unsuspended, if ongoing hosting costs were met. Here is a recently archived version of the website: https://web.archive.org/web/20250917051314/https://zythophile.co.uk/

It would be really interesting to see your critical appraisal of his last work. And by "critical" I don't mean the superficial sense of "negative" but instead the informed sense of analysis by someone who understands the subject and can provide light on what is being said. A dialogue, of sorts.

It's a shame his blog is gone. It was a true goldmine of information and knowledge. I would definitely buy a printed volume containing those blog posts.

I ordered Martyn's Porter book just before he passed even though it had no recipes and was very pricey. I'm glad I did because it is very good and every time I open it now I am struck with the fact that there will be no more such great knowledge shared by him.

PS. What saddens me as well is that there was no acknowledgement of Martyn's passing or his importance to the brewing community in any of the forums I frequent. Its as if someone doesn't have their face on YouTube, TikTok, or other such social media the homebrewers of today have no idea who they are.

Maybe the costs could be crowd funded, what would it cost? I miss his work and still regularly return to the website to read articles again, and to search for articles I hadn't, up until the account was suspended.

I told Dave last week that his brother's blog had gone offline and he said he is working on getting it back online again.
