I'm back
I've just got back from my tour of Franconia and Bohemia. Lots and lots on the trip will follow soon. I grilled brewers more precisely this time. Plenty of details about malts and fermentation regimes. Zoigl was particularly surprising, in terms of techniques.
A round of applause please for my son Andrew who posted pre-prepared texts while I was away.
And I picked up a great book yesterday in Nuremberg - "Die Besteuerung des Haus-Brauwesens in Bayern". Real general interest stuff.

Welcome back Ron. Well done Andrew.
I trust you met some breakfast boozers and drink-destroyed old men?
Drink-destroyed old men accurately describes me and my fellow tour members. There was the occasional breakfast session, too.
Hebedanz has become a "members-only" smoking club. Our pale friend was nowhere to be seen. MAybe he doesn't like fag smoke.
Hebendanz's change into a Raucher Club has basically eliminated any reason for me to drink in Forchheim...inside anyway. Beer's hit-n-miss anyway, so...
Erlangernick, I'm not so sure I would hang around for more than one now in Hebendanz. Though from what I read in the local paper in Nuremberg, the loophole for "smokers' clubs" may soon be closed.
The beer in Neder was excellent and they are smoke-free.
Indeed the loophole for "smoking clubs" (the way I read the new law, it allows for smoking at "private functions", which doesn't suggest to me that a pub can simply charge an entrance fee and require "membership" but then otherwise continue operating as a pub while allowing smoking) is being challenged in court. But so is the smoking ban itself...we'll see.
I've enjoyed Neder too, but the beer at all three breweries on the strip there seems to vary much more than it should. Pity, because I do so love the town.
There is another quaint little pub in Forchheim pouring a couple of good beers to check out--Lohmühle. Fred's entry for Forchheim has the details.
Looking forward to your ongoing reports.
Was last year's your first trip to Frankenland?
