Brown Ale - the details

If you've been following the discussion on yesterdays post, you'll have heard of my spreadsheet. The one with details of 129 Brown Ales (and two Burtons, which I left in by mistake).

Tell me what you make of it. Does it show a clear North-South split? You may need a copy of "100 Years of British Brewers" to work it out.

I know, bit short today. It's been a long week. And I want to watch Gordon Ramsay swear with my son Andrew. Berliner Weisse. I'll get up nice and early tomorrow and write something about Berliner Weisse. From "Bierbrauerei", published in 1914. A Gothic-script job. I need my full attention for that. Has to be early morning for full attention.

Not sure what your list of brown ales is meant to tell us Ron. Suffice to say as it doesn't give brewers, I deduce nothing from it North/South wise.

When I first came to Liverpool 20 plus years ago, brown ale was a common drink. We had quite a few to go at. Walker's Brown Peter, Greenalls Bullseye Brown, Higsons Double Top etc etc. Every brewer had one. These are broadly in the vein of Mann's. Liverpool is in the North. Ho Hum.

I love Berliner weiss. The problem is its a dying/dead style. Both Schultheiss and Berliner Kindl no longer brew the style. The new ones coming in are not like the traditional examples. Two new examples just came out in the last year. One from Bayrischer Bahnhof which is not to far off 'style'. The other from Weihenstephan working with Dr. Fritz Briem and is an interpretation of a 1809 recipe. Its about 5%abv and has a ton of the weizen banana and clove if I remember correctly. From all the research Ive done I can't find anything to indicate this beer was traditionally brewed at 5%abv. Everything Ive found is around 2.5-3%. Anyone seen otherwise??

Tandleman, the spreadsheet does give the brewer in all but a couple of cases when I couldn't read the handwriting. Peter Walker and Greeenhall's are both in there.

Kristen, I happened to drink the 1809 Berliner Weisse tonight. Didn't taste right to me. Read tomorrow if you want to know more about the strength of Berliner Weisse historically.

Stupid bloody thing opened at column E on my PC and this stupid thing didn't realise! I guess I deduce now that as I hinted at there was little by way of North South divide on brown ales. The Newcastle Brown stuff is just a North East abberation (sp)copied by some others in the NE

How long ago did Schultheiss and Kindl stop brewing Berliner Weisse?
I drank both in Berlin in September.

I think it's more complicated than that. The OG's vary from 1026 to 1070. I think you could also make an argument for there bing Single and Double Brown. With the Northeast beers being a subset of the latter.

Though I wouldn't want to say where you would put the dividing line.

I thoought Schultheiss had been discontinued, but that Kindl was still available.

Kindl stopped brewing the Berliner this past fall. One of my friends works for the company that imports them and said that someone way pick up the brand but it probably won't be from Berlin.

The Kindl and Schultheiss breweries are both part of Radeburger Gruppe. The Kindl brewery has closed, but Berliner Kindl Weisse is still brewed at the Schultheiss plant. For some reason they decided to discontinue the far superior Schultheiss version.

Of course the Berliner Weisse from the Schultheiss on Schönhauser Allee is East Berlin was way better than either of the West German version. When Kindl bought and closed that in the early 1990's it was the end of proper Berliner Weisse.

Ron,

When did you hear this? If thats true thats great! I also agree that the Schultheiss is a better Berliner. Have you seen any Kindl around your area? I talked to the US importer a few weeks ago and let alone did they say it wasn't made anymore, they have absolutely no stock. Man I would like a Schultheiss right now!

I've got a few bottles of Kindl Weisse. If they were any good. I'd have drunk them by now.

Blood. Blood. Lots of blood. Where does this blood come from?
