I can't really comment on the type but my favourite curry house in Leeds is Aagrah. Mumtaz comes second (but no alcohol) followed by Akbar's.
Or you could pop to Bradford for the day: curry and The Sparrow, maybe?

if you go to Akbar's say it is your birthday and they will bring out a giant nan with sparklers stuck in it.
Nawaab by the Train Station on Wellington street is decent and a little cheaper than Aagrah, Mumtaz and Akbar's.
If you're venturing out, Sheesh Mahal on Kirkstall road (ten minutes from city centure, near the vue cinema) has that 70's vibe you're looking for...
I remember the Chakwal in Leeds circa 1973 - 6. You asked for either meat or non-meat curry and the waiter would disappear behind one of those stripy plastic ribbon door hangings to re-emerge with the plates, second helpings for something like 20p.

I remember a curry and 3 chapatis was 45p in Chakwal, The first non fish restaurant I ever ate in.
Chicken on the bone or off - second helping half price and of course can't forget the onions in a minty very luminous green sauce to keep you going while your meal was being cooked
Chakwal - That was my grandfather's restaurant!
