Nürnberg area Export 1878 – 1891

As promised, Exports from around Nuremberg. How will they differ from those from around Munich?

As with the beers from Bavaria’s capital, there’s a considerable variation in gravity. The weakest aren’t much over 12º Plato, while the strongest are over 16º Plato, and would be classified as Bockbier today. The ABV is all over the place, too, varying from under 4% to over 7%.

I’m slightly intrigued that there are more examples from Erlangen than Nuremberg, despite it being a smaller town.

Not a huge difference, except that the Nuremberg beers are more highly attenuated and slightly higher in gravity.

  1. I think Erlangen today has also still more breweries than Nürnberg, doesn't it?

  2. From my reading Erlanger (and Würzburger) beers were powerful “brands” in the US market pre-WWI which may explain some of it.
