Manchester here I come!

Doesn't have quite the same ring as California here I come! But this year's travel budget is almost up. Can't afford anything too expensive.

I'll be in Manchester for the weekend. Any recommendations for good pubs in the city centre? They have to sell cask Bitter (a requirement of Dolores) and preferably pub-like.

Suggestions for curry houses would be welcome, too.

  1. Hare and Hounds - Shudehill, Millstone - Thomas St, Mother Macs - Back Piccadilly, Jolly Angler - Ducie St, Circus Tavern, Grey Horse - Both Portland St.

  2. Best curry is Mughli on curry mile. But if you're stuck central, This and That is good. East is East or Akbars if you're desperate late on. Pubs - Smithfield Mkt Tavern, Crown & Kettle, City Arms, Marble Arch (Obviously), Britons Protection, Knott, Castle if you can stick Robbie's yeast.

  3. If you're looking for proper pubs in the centre of town, as well as the Hare and Hounds on Shudehill and the Jolly Angler, there's the Unicorn on Church Street which normally has a decent pint of Draught Bass. There's also a couple of slightly trendier places near there, the reopened Lower Turks Head on Shudehill and Hydes hotel/bar The Abel Heywood, as well as the Micro Bar, Boggart Brewery's outlet in the Arndale market hall.

  4. 'Cask' at 29 Liverpool Road is good for cask, keg and bottles of beery goodness.
Handy if you are at that end of Deansgate.
Akbar's is a curry house on the same road that does huge nan bread - very popular.
All across the street from Museum of Science and Industry.

  5. Would give the Millstone a miss even if it is Lees. Well dodgy. You'll like the Hare and Hounds and decent Holts, Jolly Angler is a curiosity but I wouldn't bother. Circus and Grey Horse worth a peep. Never been in Mother Macs which probably tells you something.

Smithfield yes, Crown and Kettle definitely, City Arms a good bet, Castle as above, Marble Arch - less good than it used to be,BP and Knott at far end of Deansgate and you hate walking, but good.

Angel near Marble Arch well worth a look as is Pie and Ale. When are you around? I know you are bumping your gums somewhere or other.

  6. Or jump on a train and head for Huddersfield. Head of Steam and Kings Head on the platform. Lots of choice around town including the Grove, Rat and Ratchet and HDM Beer Shop

Great night and you can even stop in at the lovely Stalybridge Buffet Bar on the way back to Manchester

  7. If you fancy a little light tapas for lunch, I'd recommend El Rincon de Rafa off Deansgate. As for pubs, so much has changed since I left there, the only place I feel confident recommending is the Marble Arch....

  8. Following on from StuartP, if you find yourself down the Museum end of Deansgate, there's Dimitris, although neither a pub or an Indian, great food in a wonderful Victorian arcade :-)

  9. Only just seen this, but it's OK as almost all my favourites got a mention (City, Castle, C&K, Smithfield, Marble, Angel, Knott). I'd add the Bar Fringe and the PSBH, although obviously neither of them's very pubby - nor is the Smithfield, come to that. I've grown rather fond of the Grey Horse - Hyde's but with some nice guest & Beer Studio beers - and if you're in Manchester you might as well check out a Holt's pub (Ape & Apple, Old Monkey). Then there's Salford, but that's another story.

So where did you end up?
