Didn't he say one of his articles (coaching inns, I think) had been edited into nonsense? I wonder why he doesn't mention that. Then again, he forgets to mention writing any article in the book.

ReplyDeleteIt seems he didn't want to get involved with a serious evaluation; perhaps he didn't want to be controversial in anyway whatsoever and just gloss over any contentions with accuracy that you and Martyn have brought up.

Being paid to write unresearched tosh is bad enough but writing a review of a book you have co-authored without mentioning the fact is just corrupt.

ReplyDeleteThere was a letter in this month's What's Brewing from a former Ind Coope brewer calling Protz out for not checking his facts. Again. He just doesn't seem to care any more.
ReplyDeleteI look at the Companion like Wikipedia: there is a lot of interesting stuff there, but anything actually important needs to be checked with a reliable source.
This might not fit into this post, per say, but figured I would throw it out there... Garret Oliver thinks growlers are bad for beer, and since he is the editor-in-chief of the Oxford Companion to Beer , he must be an expert on the subject of beer...
