Boozy Victorian doctors
Here's an even better example of the medical profeesion's different attitude to drink in the 19th century. It's a page of classified ads from the Lancet of April 20th 1872. (The Lancet is a medical journal which is still published.)

About 7 or 8 years ago, we had a superb illustrated press release from Carlsberg talking about how Special Brew was drunk by perfectly respectable people - doctors, lawyers and the like - and that it was drink for the discerning gentleman. Sadly, it seems to have been lost.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of a phrase more likely to stimulate a jaded appetite than "Here, have some Fluid Meat".

ReplyDeleteLove it. From that Old Marsala Wine ad, we now need to find a copy of Dr. Drulit's (sp?) "Report on Cheap Wine" for his views on binge drinking.
