I've got some old recipes from Eldridge, Pope and Co for their Oat Malt Stout and it was a parte-gyle with their ordinary Stout. Stout had OG = 1034.4deg and the OMS OG=1031.6deg. Interestingly weaker than the stout. The malt bill for a gyle brewed on 22nd Dec 1942 comprised Black malt (1 Qr), Crystal Malt (2Qr) and Mild Ale Malt (12.5Qr) BUT no malt made from oats and no oatmeal!! Intersting, eh? Lots of No2 Invert and Edme malt extract to bulk up. However, looking at a 1956 record of an OMS (gravity reduced to 1030)parte-gyle with their "Double Stout" which had an OG of 1041, flaked oats were now used; the malt bill now using pale ale malt, chocolate malt and crystal with barley syrup, and malt extract added to copper. This is probably the OMS I drank in the 1970s. Poor old Eldridge, Pope. Not quite brewers of the worst beers in Christendom, that was brewed (in my humble opinion) just up the road!Alastair Wallace (Retired Brewer & Sec. "The Dead Brewers' Soc.)noreply@blogger.com
