Don't know how accurate it is but it's a good story.<br /><br />"The Pattison brothers, Robert and Walter, started off as dairy wholesalers in Edinburgh but seized the opportunity of a massive boom in the whisky industry to make a fortune. <br /><br />They did this by using novel advertising techniques such as handing out 500 grey parrots that recited: "Buy Pattisons' Whisky" to Scottish licensed grocers. The gave their whiskies patriotic names like "The Gordon" after Gordon of Khartoum with him in full dress uniform on the label. <br /><br />They would also pretend to miss their train and hire one to take them into town, at a huge cost. Luckily the press were always on hand to see this.<br /><br />On the back of their fortune from the whisky trade they built the Duddingston Brewery in 1895. By 1898 however the whisky bubble had burst and the brothers were declaired bankrupt. Both were eventually sent to prison."Ikenoreply@blogger.com
